FAQs

Agricultural

Have you had a leak or a spill?
While fuel oil is one of the safest forms of fuel you can use, leaks and spills both need to be dealt with as soon as you become aware of them.  In the case of a leak, please contact your tank manufacturer for help immediately. In the meantime, there are some simple steps you can take to try and prevent damage becoming more serious: Rub the crack with soap, which may act as a temporary fix for smaller cracks
  • Apply a clay-based leak sealing putty (available from plumbers’ and builders’ merchants) as a temporary way to seal a crack or leak
You should also contact the 24-hour Environment Agency's UK Pollution Incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60. You will find more useful advice at www.environment-agency.gov.uk
How long will my order take to arrive?
We aim to deliver to our agricultural customers within 48 hours; however, during busy times your delivery could take longer so, if your need is urgent, please tell us when placing your order. To make sure you never run out, it's a good idea to check your oil level regularly or install an oil monitoring device.
Can I have my oil delivered automatically?
Yes, when you sign up for our automated Top Up Service, we will work with you to ensure the regular deliveries you need. For more details, call us on 0845 650 4006.
Do I have to be here for deliveries?
We appreciate that you have a busy farm to run, so as long as we can gain safe access to your tank, you don't need to be there for your delivery. However, every delivery is accurately metered, so we will always leave a printed receipt to confirm how much oil was delivered as well as the total cost.
Can you deliver to remote or restricted sites?
Our comprehensive fleet includes four, six and eight-wheeled tankers, as well as large multi-compartment and articulated lorries. Some of our tankers also come with 180-foot hoses, ensuring that we can reach just about any tank. If there are any access issues at your farm please just let us know when you place your order, so we can send the right vehicle for your needs.

When do I need to order?
Naturally, this all depends on how much oil your system is using. However, as a rough guide, we generally suggest you should place an order when you have:
  • 20% left in your tank in Summer
  • 40% left in your tank in Winter
This should ensure that we can get a delivery to you before you run out, regardless of the weather. You can get a quote, right here.
How often should I check my fuel oil?
To reduce the chances of running out of oil, we advise to you check your oil levels once a week: especially in Winter, when your usage is likely to increase significantly.
We have restricted access. Is that a problem?
No, we have a comprehensive fleet that includes small four-wheel tankers; so we can deliver just about anywhere that has road access. However, you can help us to arrange an efficient delivery by telling us about any route or site restrictions when you place your order.
What is the minimum amount of fuel I can order?
We know that some people don't have a massive fuel oil tank, so we are happy to make deliveries starting at just 500 litres.
Questions about your order?
If you have any questions about an order call us on 0845 600 4006.
How quickly will I get my fuel?
When you place an order, we will confirm a delivery timeframe and keep to it. Though it's worth bearing in mind that we are always busiest just before Christmas, so if you think you may run low in the festive season, it's best to order as early as possible.
Help! I’ve run out of fuel
We're here to keep you warm whatever happens. So if you have run out unexpectedly, call us on 0845 600 4006 and we will be happy to arrange an emergency delivery.
Do I need to be at home when you deliver my oil?
No, as long as there is safe access to your tank, you don’t need to be at home when we deliver.
How do I know how much oil was delivered?
All deliveries are accurately metered. So whether you are at home or not, your driver will print a delivery ticket showing you the precise amount dispensed and the total cost.
My tank is away from the road. Can you still deliver?
Our fleet includes small tankers and some with 120ft hoses, so we can reach most tanks, including those in remote locations. However, to make sure we send the right size of tanker, please let us know about any access restrictions when you order.
What can I do to help ensure my delivery?
Here at Southern Counties Fuels, we pride ourselves on always getting to your property. But you can help to ensure smooth deliveries too:
  • If there are brambles/trees/hedges close to your tank, it's useful if they are cut back to enable deliveries
  • If your driveway is too narrow for a tanker, let us know so we can send one with an extra long hose
  • If we will have to negotiate a weak bridge or narrow road, let us know so we can send a small tanker.
What is the difference between kerosene and gas oil?
Both kerosene and gas oil are produced from crude oil, but they are refined in slightly different ways.  Kerosene is refined almost exclusively for use in domestic boiler systems, because it provides a clean and very efficient burn. Gas Oil is less combustible than Kerosene and is used in all sorts of applications, including diesel engines. It is also commonly used to fuel agricultural and commercial machinery, but is still used in many older oil-fired boilers.
